Here is the first video of an Agile Fundamentals series that I’ve been packaging for my client L’Occitane en Provence for software development teams. In these videos I’m trying to cover the fundamentals but also fix the most common mistakes you will find in Agile & Scrum basic trainings. First video, addressing the most pivotal shift from past project approach: developing your product feature by feature from the beginning, instead of following a technical logic (detailed design and solving all problem theoretically, then technical foundations, then more elaborated components, then end to end functionalities). The negative stake of agile transformations we don't talk about: when it fails, there is a long backlash that will hold back the company's performance. After the human-centred perspective, this second bit is on a cold minded angle, the company performance: why would shareholder care if a transformation attempt doesn’t deliver? How does this affect the company performance, people's fatigue apart? It’s a bit cynical, but I find this point to be more convincing, because in the high of the moment leaders tend to hear more their small circle and have a deaf ear for what’s going on with the teams, somewhere between not having time to listen, wishful thinking, and a trend of arrogance infused by wrongly put methods in the like of “it’s for the greater good” and “some will never get it”. To which I could answer “if they don’t get it, we just suck at explaining”, but this too will meet a deaf ear. So there, the brutal truth: you fail an attempt at transforming your ways of working, you usually gets 2 to 5 years of setback before trying again. In economics, they call it the repugnancy cost. I don’t have exact statistics and research but that’s my personal observations after 15 years in this field. Most Agile transformations drag for years. It exhausts people, it backfires on the organisations. In this first video of my Facts & Fallacies series, I share what exactly is happening for people going through these, the cause of their distress, and why we should stop rolling out transformations like it's a Windows update. This video is a part of Facts and Fallacies of Transformations, a talk I did at Wild Conference in December 2020. As Agile transfos have become a massive trend (and that was pre-pandemic), I'm increasingly frustrated to see how the mainstream approach goes exactly against the actual successes on the field. I'm also quite saddened because it harms the people, it harms the dream of working better together which is usually more pleasant and more fulfilling. To try stop the madness, this talk is designed with a couple of principles in mind I try to bring clear rationale to understand what's wrong with the mainstream "roll it out!" approach, and what to do instead. On the topic of transformations, I hear a lot of rants and opinions but no real explanations and rhetoric. I'm trying to fill that void. We can talk about mindset forever, but I believe that people are smart, and most of the time we just need to be better at explaining (and if they still don't get it, we simply may be wrong). I'm trying to convey triggering questions and images you can bring up at work. If any of this can prevent the worse from happening, or at least spin it in a better way, then it's a win for me The talk is split into bite-sized videos, to be released every couple of days.
